Merge xLabelFormat contributions by @jonthornton.

Browse Source 
Rename `xLabelsFormat` -> `xLabelFormat` (grammatically better :))

Add note to example to recommend use of `xLabels` option when using
`xLabelFormat`.

Use $.extends rather than setting spec.fmt directly (avoids modifying
the globals).

Add a test.
